Activities - Hunting and Fishing

Our speciality - If you want to catch it, we can get you close enough. The rest is up to you. Note - All Hunting and fishing activities can be done within a 30 minute radius of Lodge. Please note most of these activities are wheelchair accessible.

Hunting - Fairchase
Goats, pig, deer, possums, hares, rabbits, ducks… it's all here on your doorstep.

Mudbrick Lodge is nestled in a valley of native bush, so the surrounding area provides a great base for local hunting.

Duck-shooting season begins first sat in May. Fish and Game licenses are required for game birds (We have these at Lodge). All other equipment provided.

Time from Lodge - 5 minutes . Time needed - half day (5 hours) or full day (8-9 hours).


Pig Hunting - Fairchase with Dogs

The Rai Valley and surrounding area is known for some of the best pig hunting in the country. Exhilarating! We have access to several private-hunting areas.
Time from Lodge - 10 minutes - 30 minutes. Time needed - dependant on area hunted can be from 4 hours to 8 hours.


Deer Hunting
We have access to a private hunting area where there are fallow deer and red deer resident. This is fairchase hunting within a naturalised game park.

Time from Lodge - 15 minutes . Time needed - dependant on area hunted can be from 3 hours to 6 hours. Fitness required - low to medium, rolling farm fringes and native bush.


Fishing / Boat Charter
Mudbrick's Local guide Mike Turner is a local legend, born in the area, he has been fishing, diving around the sounds since he could crawl. Many a guest have landed their first fish, or caught their first cray with Mike.

Mudbrick Lodge is ideally situated off the road out to French Pass. This gives deep-water access to both sides of the Sounds - great to help ensure sheltered fishing spots. From snapper and blue cod fishing in the Sounds to chasing the kingfish and groper through the inner D'Urville. Winter fishing alongside the mussel farms produces some very large snapper. All fishing equipment supplied - boat rods and salt water fly rods.

Scuba Diving
Again Mike's wealth of experience as a local commercial diver – makes your experience unforgettable. A chance to catch your first NZ crayfish.

Discover Mikes secret spots. Blindfolds may be required during the journey, no gps allowed!
PADI ticket required.

Snorkeling
Experience this great adventure swimming with the reef amongst local fish, seals, penguins and eagle rays.

Fresh Water Fly Fishing
The Rai and Pelorus Rivers are known to deliver some of the best brown trout fishing in New Zealand. Excellent riverbank access. Successful fly and spinning.

It has been a great season in 2006 with some large rainbow trout in the river. Most guides are now choosing to operate catch and release policies throughout the area. All fishing equipment provided.
