Activities - The Outer Edges

Down the East and West coastlines - It's all here

Kaikoura
There are few places with such a huge diversity of marine life so readily accessible to people and existing in such a spectacular natural setting. This is due to the Kaikoura's close proximity to the continental shelf approximately one kilometre offshore. Whales are the primary draw card to this area, they swim closer to the shore here than anywhere else in the world. Sperm Whales all year round, Humpbacks mostly in June, Orcas mostly October to November and others on their seasonal migration. Here you can sit and watch the whales frolic, you can swim with the dolphins or wander the rocky peninsula where seals sleep and frolic. Glass-bottom boat trips are available. The more adventurous few may like to try the shark diving. Ask Tania for a Full Kaikoura Pack.
Time from Lodge - 2 hours. Time needed full day.
