Media Page - The NZ Life & Leisure Magazine

A friend approached me earlier this year, fascinated by my dramatic reinvention of myself and my lifestyle … my shift south, career change and opening Mudbrick Lodge two and a half years ago. Many people thought I was mad – I had often wondered that myself. So what was the outcome?

Kate Coughlan (former editor of NZ House & Garden and onHoliday) was in the process of launching a new magazine, NZ Life & Leisure – its tag line Living the Dream. In Kate’s own words: “The magazine offers an opportunity to talk to and meet people who are stimulating, who have goals larger than their own self-satisfaction and who have dreams for this country that are exciting.

New Zealand society has changed dramatically in the past 10 years. Who has the same dreams and aspirations they did a decade ago? Who lives the way they did a decade ago?”

I was slightly nervous, this being my first foray into media hands. Kate and Mark Smith (photographer) joined me at the Lodge for the weekend of the Rai Valley A&P Show. We started by dropping in to pick up some veges from my neighbour who grows them for me (I’m still a city girl at heart, still learning which end of a spade to use!!) and teaching school kids to make fudge. We didn’t stop all weekend … hunting, judging at the Rai Show, and lots of stimulating, thought-provoking conversation across the kitchen table. Kate and Mark were thrown into Valley life, boots and all. This was about the changes I had made to my life, the reasons and the outcome.

I believe everything happens for a reason. NZ Life & Leisure’s visit was an amazingly timely experience for me. It gave me the opportunity to take stock, appreciate how far I have come, what I have achieved. Because even though I have changed my lifestyle the mind shift is not always the same and old habits like going 100 miles an hour die hard.

I think in New Zealand there has been a dramatic shift of values, lifestyles and beliefs, especially from people of my generation. Many Kiwis are now putting more importance on quality of lifestyle, dreams and sharing experiences.

“Tania Lawrence was a big-city girl, a late-night girl in her late 20s, spending four nights a week at a Ponsonby bar, running a large call centre, running on adrenalin. Then she met a boy…” Kate Coughlan, NZ Life & Leisure
